Last year in the opening match of the season, Maconaquah lost to the Golden Eagles of Oak Hill by 30 strokes when the Braves tallied a final score of 201 at Rock Hollow. This year, the Braves closed the gap by shooting 185 and losing by only a dozen strokes. Leading the Braves was Senior Camron Metcalf with a 42. Carmron hit the ball better than his final score indicated, but some bad bounces left him with challenging chip shots. Second for the Braves was Sophomore Jayden Overdorf with a 46. Jayden showed off his power by driving over the green on a 290 yard par four and a 270 yard par four (with a three wood). Jayden’s round got off to a rocky start, but he was able to bounce back and finish well. Sophomore JT Dobbs was third on the team with a 48. Like Camron he hit the ball better than his score reflected, but he couldn’t get any putts to fall and drew some bad lies in the rough. Freshman Colt Myers, making his high school golf debut, was fourth on the team with a 49. Colt hit the ball extremely well all match, but his first timer nerves caused some errant chips and missed putts. As the match progress, Colt found his balance and played the last four holes in only 3 over. A trio of Brave golfers finished with 54s. Senior Carson Hollars, Junior Zach Duke and Sophomore Owen Woolever. Carston hit the ball well, but the strong wind pushed his shots further off line than expected. Zach fought his driver all evening and made it hard for him to get any momentum going. Owen Woolever’s high ball flight with the wind made it a challenge for him to post, but he played smart golf the entire round. Sophomore Jude Callane finished out scoring with a 61. Playing in his first high school match, Jude hit the ball well, but struggled around Arbor Traces subtle sloped greens. Oak Hill won the match 173 to 185 and Oak Hills Brayden Sommers was the match medalist with a 40. Huge thank you to Coach Nelson and the staff at Arbor Trace for a fantastic match. The Braves are back in action Thursday as the face defending sectional champion Western at Rock Hollow. As always, the Braves appreciate the support of all the parents, family and friends that come out to support the team each time. PHOTOS JT Dobbs prepares to hit his tee shot on hole one.
