It took Senior Camron Metcalf all of two shots to know it was going to be a good night at Leaning Tree Golf Course. After a drive that was pulled a bit, he hit an approach wedge over a tree and to within eight feet. He calmly rolled in his birdie putt and used that momentum to finish the day with an outstanding 38 that was good enough for medalist honors for the event. Sophomore Jadyen Overdorf continued his stellar play turning in a 42 which included a quadruple bogey after he had trouble with a bunker on the fourth hole. Jayden should his mental fortitude as he followed that up with a spectacular up and down from the bunker on the fifth hole and a solid par on the sixth hole, his final hole. His score was good enough for a tie for 5th place in the event. Fellow Sophomore JT Dobbs final tally of 45 was good enough for third for the Braves. JT had no luck on the greens as multiple putts stopped just inches from going in. Once the putts start to fall, JT’s scores will drop. Junior Zach Duke hit his driver extremely well, but struggled keeping approach shots below the hole on the speedy Leaning Tree greens. His 47 was good enough for fourth overall for the Braves. Freshman Colt Myers had an up and down night, typical for a freshman player. After two good shots on his opening hole, he hit a wedge to the eighth green that drifted right into the water. This bad break led to a string of double bogies before he regained his composure and finished with a 48. Overall the Maconaquah Varsity team finished with a 172, a season low by three shots and a 22 shot improvement from last, and good enough to capture second place behind a good Lewis Cass team (165). The Braves did defeat North Miami (179) and Tri-Central (DNF). In Junior Varsity action, Sophomores Owen Woolever and Jude Callane paced the Braves with final scores of 50 and 51 respectively. Owen played well most of the evening and had some challenging short game shots. Jude played a very steady, solid round by hitting the ball solidly and staying out of trouble to avoid big scores. Senior Joe Butcher and Sophomore Chandler Mofield tied for third for the Braves with 55. Joe hit some solid approach shots including a fantastic five iron into the seventh green. Chandler had a bit of trouble off the tee, but hit his approach and chips well. Senior Carsten Hollars also struggled off the tee as he is trying to get use to a new driver. He was able to recover well on most holes and kept his score respectable. Overall the JV shot 211 and finished second in the JV bracket behind Lewis Cass Special thank you to Tournament Director Jay Hullinger for organizing such a terrific, well run event. Also thanks to the Truax family and all the staff at Leaning Tree as the course was in excellent shape. Thank you to all the parents, family and friends that support the team each match.
