Braves Win Second in a Row; Stoll Earns Third Medalist Honor of the Season

Maybe it was the long road trip. Maybe it was the lack of practice because of the recent rain. Maybe they were simply tired. Whatever the reason, the Lady Braves didn’t have their best night, but they found a way to grind out a one-stroke victory over a scrappy Whitko team at Sycamore Golf Club. Leading the Braves and earning match medalist honors was senior Aubrey Stoll. Aubrey played solid golf throughout her first seven holes and recorded her fourth birdie of the season before running into trouble on her final two holes. Despite the difficult finish, she posted a 45, which was good enough to earn medalist honors by nine strokes. It was Aubrey’s third medalist performance of the season. Senior Delaney Duke had a difficult night getting off the tee and frequently found herself in the thick rough, which has been difficult to maintain because of the wet conditions over the past two weeks. The challenging lies also affected her short game, as several well-struck chip shots released farther than expected on Sycamore’s sloping greens. Delaney battled throughout the round and finished with a 61. Junior Delaney Farnham did not have the night she expected. After blasting a great drive off the first tee, her second shot caught a tree and ended up in the water. On the second hole, she found the thick rough and had difficulty advancing the ball. Unfortunately, the bad breaks continued throughout the round, and Delaney finished with a season-high 66. Sophomore Evelyn Hanson also battled consistency throughout the evening. Well-struck shots were sometimes followed by slight mishits, and she also found the thick rough difficult to navigate. Evelyn kept battling and finished with a 66. Fellow sophomore Brina Smith also had difficulty with the rough, finding it challenging to advance the ball from several tough lies. Playing through a sore back, Brina gutted it out for as long as she could before having to pick up on the final hole because of the discomfort. She finished the night with a 69. In the end, it certainly wasn’t the Lady Braves’ best performance of the season, but good teams find ways to win even when they aren’t playing their best. Maconaquah did just enough, edging Whitko 238-239 to earn its second consecutive victory. The Lady Braves will be back in action on August 28 when they compete in a five-team meet at Peru Municipal Golf Course. As always, the Lady Braves appreciate all of the fans who continue to come out and support the team each week.
