Lady Braves improve to 6-2 on the season Last week, sophomore Evelyn Hanson fired a career-low round to help the Lady Braves defeat Oak Hill. Thursday night, fellow sophomore Brina Smith followed suit, shooting a career-best score of her own to help secure a victory over Southwood. Smith, who has been working hard on her swing, finally saw that work pay off as she fired a career-low 60. Her round was filled with highlights, beginning with a 40-yard pitch that finished just one foot from the hole on her opening hole. She later hit her tee shot to within 10 feet on the par-3 fourth hole, blasted a 215-yard drive on the sixth and made a tremendous up-and-down for par on the eighth. With the Lady Braves locked in a close contest with Southwood, Smith’s career-best round proved to be the score that secured the victory. Senior Aubrey Stoll’s round got off to a difficult start when she pushed her tee shot right into the trees on the challenging second hole. Her second shot remained in the woods before she was finally able to escape on her third. After finding her ball in the tall rough, she was barely able to advance it before hitting her fifth shot onto the green and making the putt for double bogey. Rather than letting the rough hole derail her round, Stoll showed the grit and determination that has made her an outstanding point guard on the hardwood as well. She immediately righted the ship with a par on the third hole before bouncing back with a birdie on the fourth. Stoll finished with a 43, earning medalist honors for the fourth time in five matches. Senior Delaney Duke continues to show signs that her long game is returning to the level she expects. On the nearly 300-yard second hole, Duke left herself just 73 yards into the green following a tremendous drive. Unfortunately, her short game did not match her long game on this night, as she struggled around the greens and with the putter. Her final tally of 58 was still good enough for the Lady Braves’ second-best score. Junior Delaney Farnham battled an inconsistent night off the tee, leaving herself several difficult approach shots into the greens. That put added pressure on her short game, and she struggled to convert putts throughout the round. One of the highlights of her night came on the eighth hole, where she beautifully negotiated a 55-foot putt and two-putted for par. Farnham finished with a 62. When the final scores were tallied, the Lady Braves earned a hard-fought 223-229 victory over the shorthanded Southwood Knights. The Lady Braves also wish Southwood’s injured golfer a speedy recovery. Maconaquah returns to action Saturday at Round Barn Golf Course for the Rochester Invitational.
