As they prepared to tee off for their first competitive rounds of the season, the Lady Braves of the Maconaquah golf team were a bit anxious and cold. First of the season tournaments jitters and weather more fitting for football than golf, could have lead to a rough start to the season, but the Lady Braves resolve was able to overcome that. The teams final total of 372 in windy conditions was impressive and their ability to bounce back from bad breaks/bounces showed maturity. Senior Daisy Williams led the scoring for the Lady Braves after she posted a 2 over par 74. Daisy showed the experience of being a senior when she bounced back from an unfortunate break off the first tee to make the turn at one over par (37). She continued her steady play on the back nine, making two birdies en route to another 37. Her 74 earned her a second place medal. Senior Finley Dobbs started her round off with a big drive off the first tee. Finley followed up that drive with more good shots as she made the turn in 45. Finley played well on the back nine, but the wind picked up and her scoring increased slightly as she carded 51 on the back. Her 96 was a personal best for Finley for 18 holes. Finley’s work on her short game, especially her putting, paid off on Saturday. Sophomore Aubrey Stoll also started with a big drive on the first hole as her drive only left her a short iron into the first green. Aubrey acknowledge didn’t play to her expectations, but she was able to shoot a very solid 91 (45-46) , a new personal best for 18 holes. Aubrey has always been a fantastic ball striker and as her short game improves, her scores will drop. Making her debut as a varsity golfer on Saturday was Sophomore Delaney Duke. As those two in front of her, Delaney began her varsity career with a long drive on number one. As expected, Delaney had some very good shots and some shots that went offline. As she gains competitive experience, she will learn how to take advantage of the good shots and recover from the bad breaks. Delaney shot a personal best 117 with nine hole scores of 59 and 58. Also making her debut, and her return to competitive golf, was Sophomore Emma Bond. Emma worked diligently on her game all summer and it showed as she hit some shots that showed the potential she has as a golfer. Emma also has the ability to move beyond bad shots and focus on the next shot. This helped her not only get past a rough opening hole, but she improved her nine hole score by 5 from the front to the more challenging back (58 to 53). Her final score of 111 is a personal best. As any player playing their first tournament, Emma will learn from each and every outing and her scores will improve each time. Overall the Lady Braves did well in their first tournament with a final tally of 372, which was good enough for 4th place in a solid field. As always, the Lady Braves appreciate the support of all the parents, family and friends that come out and support the team. A special thank you to Dykeman Golf Course for hosting the first Logansport Invitational and Logansport Coach Abby Lundy for the invite.
