Varsity vs Wabash High School (71 - 44) Win Coach Burrus Quotes "It was great to open TRC with a win at home. We stayed the course in this game. I really liked our 3rd quarter. We won it 28-6. Wabash is still a good defensive team. They lost a lot of offensive firepower with the class graduating from their Semi State last year. I really liked our defense in the second half. We ended up with 21 steals for this game. This helped limit Wabash to only 41 shots. We were able to get 64 shots which helped us grow the lead in the second half. I feel the 3 guys that have the experience are leading us. Josiah Ball, AJ Kelly, and Fuddy Kile are all giving us great minutes. They have played a lot, together. I will write more about them as a group, in detail in another article. I thought Nate Rader played great defense throughout the game. Landon Adams had 5 assists and really did a nice job making quick decisions to lead to easy baskets. Devon Murry gave us what we needed on both ends. These new varsity players will take some time to fully find their role at this level. One of the things I love about coaching varsity basketball is it is difficult to break through. You have to work at it because every team you play will be prepared, and do everything they can to take away what you want to do. As a varsity basketball player, you have to really stick with it. The life lessons these kids learn are in abundance. This week, Matt Golitko came in and delivered brand new sweats for our varsity, and jv teams. He talked to our team about playing at Maconaquah. Matt was a great player at Maconaquah. He talked to our teams about the life lessons they are learning as a member of the team will help them throughout life. Donating the sweats was just such a great contribution. Thank you Matt for all you have done, and continue to do for Maconaquah Basketball. Speaking of life lessons... Last week against North Miami, late in the game a young man got in the game the last couple of minutes. I remember he played most of the jv game. In the varsity game he got the ball in the corner and hit a 3. His name is Gavyn Fritz. I share this because after the game Gavyn was not feeling well. He has since been diagnosed with leukemia. This week he has been receiving treatments in Indianapolis. This reminded me of how important the time is that we have with these kids. I am hoping that Gavyn can work through this. I just wanted to share about him on here so people that read this are aware of this situation. I am rooting for Gavyn Fritz and his family to get through this."
