Metcalf shines in gloomy weather. Braves fall to Panthers

Junior team captain Camron Metcalf had quite a bounce back Thursday night at Chippendale Golf Course. Standing on the 15th tee, the talented golfer found himself three over par in a cold rain. After a big drive, Camron found himself with a short second short to the 15th green. Camron took a wedge and hit a spectacular shot that found the bottom of the cup for an eagle. Camron then proceeded to birdie the next two holes, both par threes, so he had three consecutive 2s on his scorecard. This four under burst helped him finish as match medalist with a one under par 36. The 36 is Camron’s career high school personal best. Freshman JT Dobbs was second for the Braves with a round of 53. JT was having trouble off the tee, which will cause problems on Chippendale’s tight fairways with out of bounds on both sides. JT, showing maturity beyond his freshman status, bounced back to par the last two holes. Fellow freshman Jayden Overdorf also shot a 53 on the challenging back nine at Chippendale Golf Course. Like most freshmen, Jayden is striving for consistency in his game. His scoring was up and down during the round, but he did have three pars in his final four holes. Sophomore Zach Duke, who has been working on his driver, found the tight fairways and strong winds quite a challenge as some well struck shots drifted or bounced out of bounds. Zach showed smart playing by hitting shorter clubs off the tee late in the match to keep the ball in play. Junior Joe Butcher had a trying day as the rain, winds, and small landing areas caused problems. Joe, who finished with 64, shows a ton of potential, but just needs more experience playing in competition. As he gains experience, his scores will drop. Maconquah’s 206 was bested by Western’s 166; a fantastic score recorded by the Panthers considering the weather conditions. In Junior Varsity action, Jakob Grant stole the show with a 56. Jakob got the round started by playing bogey golf on the first few holes. Increased wind and cold rain led to a few high scores during the middle of his round, but he was able to finish strong and record a personal best. Sophomore Clay Christopher and Freshman Owen Woolever were next on the Junior Varsity with each shooting 64 respectively. Clay’s game is starting to round into shape as he was hitting fairways and putting well. Like his teammates, he struggled as the match went on and the rain and wind increased. Owen continues to gain experience playing high school golf and appears to be on the edge of a breakthrough. He was observed playing an amazing escape shot from a creek bed on the 15th hole. Junior Drew Grigsby and Sophomore Aiden McKinley rounded out scoring for the Braves with 71 an 70 respectively. Both players are trying to find their groove this season and both were seen hitting some really good shots. Drew hit an excellent chip on the 13th green and Aiden hit a nice approach shot on the 14th green. The Braves at back in action on Saturday April 26th at the Logansport Invitational. As always, the Braves appreciate the support of the parents, family and friends that attend every match. Double thank you for doing so on such a cold, rainy, windy evening.
